LET OP: DIT BESTAND IS VERRE VAN COMPLEET. GELIEVE FOUTEN (BUGS) TE MELDEN
BIJ R.W. GERRITS E-MAIL: R.Gerrits@research.ptt.nl
VRAGEN EN SUGGESTIES ZIJN EVENEENS WELKOM!
****** V2.02 (19-12-1992)
Levels=<n>
Version=<n.nn>
[Entities]
1~OCCA~2~<CClinks>
2~OBCA~ ~<BClinks>
2~IOBC~ ~<BC_LEX>
De namen worden als volgt gebruikt:
[Flows]
L <CClinks> ~ ~SETUP ~req.
<CClinks> <BClinks>a ~ ~BEARER ENQ.~req. ind.
****** V2.1 (10-1-1993)
- Gedeeltelijk geimplemeteerde interaktieve omgeving.
- Bug-fixes om met 386 memory-managers samen te werken.
- Bug-fixes om met coprocessors samen te werken (486).
****** V3.0 voor DOS - beta I (eind januari 1993)
source file eerst geheel gelezen, vervolgens vrijwel geheel geinterpreteerd,
********************************************
Vanaf versie 3.0 is in iedere .FLW file het [Document] item
VERPLICHT EN MOET TENMINSTE DE INSTELLING
Version = <n.nn>
BEVATTEN.
Bijvoorbeeld:
FLOWS /IHM=eps -S=confer.set /D=c:\temp\blad est*.flw rel*.flw
^^^
buiten beschouwing gelaten.
- De volgende opties zijn toegevoegd:
FirstPage, LastPage, ObsoleteLayout, OutlineImage,
PageOverlay, UserFormH, UserFormV, TwoLines.
... ~ <Page#> ~ ... wordt huidig paginanummer van [Page=n] header;
... ~ <PageChr> ~ ... wordt kleine letter, waarbij [Page=n] een "a"
geeft als n = FirstPage (uit [Document] item);
... ~ <RunPage#> ~ ... wordt huidig uitvoerpaginanummer van Flows;
case-sensitive.
- Programma is op verschillende punten efficienter uitgevoerd.
- Nieuwe optie "AskConfirm=" in FLOWS.INI toegevoegd.
- Overal waar voorheen scherpe haken werden gebruikt "<>", moeten nu ronde
haken worden gebruikt "()". Deze wijziging omvat o.a. nicknames, dummy
entiteiten, titel codes en variabelen.
FLOWS IS GEEN VRIJE SOFTWARE. DE GEREGISTREERDE VERSIE HEEFT GEEN
OPSTARTMELDINGEN EN WERKT AANZIENLIJK SNELLER. DE WINDOWS UITVOERING
ZAL ALLEEN BESCHIKBAAR KOMEN VOOR GEREGISTREERDE GEBRUIKERS.

MIND: THIS FILE IS FAR INCOMPLETE. PLEASE REPORT ERRORS (BUGS)
TO R.W. GERRITS E-MAIL: R.Gerrits@research.ptt.nl
QUESTIONS AS WELL AS SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME!
****** V2.02 (12-19, 1992)
- Concerning the file format of the .FLW files:
Following two options are added in the [Document] item:
Levels=<n>
Version=<n.nn>
The version indication is optional, but it is strongly recommended to
embody the "Version=" settings to preserve correct processing bij future
versions of Flows.
- Reference to a FE may be achieved in several ways:
by using the FE number,
by using the FE's name enclosed in quotes (""),
by using a nickname enclosed in angle brackets (<>).
Last method goes like this:
A nickname is defined in the [Entities] item, behind the entity name and
the optional level:
[Entities]
1~OCCA~2~<CCleft>
2~OBCA~ ~<BCleft>
2~IOBC~ ~<BC_LEX>
The nicknames may be used as following:
[Flows]
L <CCleft> ~ ~SETUP ~req.
<CCleft> <BCleft>a ~ ~BEARER ENQ.~req. ind.
The names are case-sensitive. Spaces are not allowed.
The profit of this method is in the fact that information flows may be
copied to a different page on which the same nicknames are defined, but
DIFFERENT entities.
The margins can be refered to by L and R or by 0 for left margin and
9 for right margin (allowed on A4 portrait only).
****** V2.1 (1-10, 1993)
- Partial implemented interactive environment.
- Bug-fixes for co-operation with 386 memory managers.
- Bug fixes for co-operation with math processors (486).
****** V3.0 for DOS - beta I (end Januari 1993)
- Pull down menus and functionkey bar avaiable, but all funtions are
disabled.
- Several other changes.
****** V3.0 for DOS - beta II (medio Februari 1993)
- Menu with mouse control now supported. Only some Help functions, Exit,
Run and Memory usage operate interactive. The normale command line options
still work correct.
- Landscape EPS files are now really images in landscape orientation.
- Several other changes.
****** V3.0 for DOS - beta III (2-27, 1993)
- Menu functions Open, Run, Clear, Retrieve settings, and partially Default
configuration are added. The status screen show sinfull information again.
The batch mode is fully operative. Already selected files (on the command
line) are displayed in the status window.
- Open, Run and Clear go inactive if they cannot be executed.
- Open is now directly available via s function key.
- Leaving the program is now done by <Alt-F4> (and <Alt-X> and <Ctrl-Q>).
A dark grey interaction window can be achieved by <ESC> and <Ctrl-F4>.
These changes preserve a better similarity with the final Windows
implementation.
- Large internal revisions are implemented concerning the reading of the
command line values, FLOWS.INI settings, [Settings] settings, [Document]
settings and [Page=...] settings. Now the complete source file is read,
and subsequently almost entirely interpret, and finally exported.
- Now a very strict distinction exists between the FLOWS.INI file and other
.INI files created by the user. Therefor it is recommended to use the
extension .SET for user configuration files. Doing so it is clear that
these files do not contail INITIAL settings.
- A total rearrangement has taken place of the position at which all settings
can be changed or created. This rearrangement is partially even relevant
for files created for older version of Flows, but this will not introduce
essential problems.
- ******************** MIND! **********************************************
From version 3.0 every .FLW file MUST contain the [Document] item
CONTAINING AT LEAST THE SETTING
Version = <n.nn>
If this settings is not available Flows will asume the source file to be
created for an obsolete version. Some new options will not be accepted!
For version 3.0 and future higher versionnumbers the second digit of the
minor version number will be ignored. So 3.11 will be interpret as 3.1.
****** V3.0 for DOS - beta IV (3-14, 1993)
- In the functionkey bar the options Open and Run are now made inactive if
these options are inactive in the pull down menus.
- File names are now read correctly from the FLOWS.INI file when any
"()\" character are appear.
- Command line switches may now be preceded by a "/" as well as a "-".
Options may be merged after the first "/" or "-". Par example:
FLOWS /IHM=eps -S=confer.set /D=c:\temp\side est*.flw rel*.flw
^^^
No following switch may be merged behind the options /M, /S, and /D,
because no distinction can be made between a file name and a switch.
For user configuration files (option /S) a distinction is made between the
stated version number and the file compatibility version number. By
checking the used settings is deduced which version of Flows will still be
able to process the file correctly. Blank lines appearing within an item
are excluded in this deduction!
- An entirely new - and more efficient - lay out is implemented.
- Following options are added:
FirstPage, LastPage, ObsoleteLayout, OutlineImage,
PageOverlay, UserFormH, UserFormV, TwoLines.
The "PageOverlay=" settings can (de)active page sharing for printer output
(more than 1 image per page). This will computed automatically.
- Now all fields are relevant in the [Title] item. All fields will be merged.
If a field contains one of the following codes, the code will be replaced
by its value:
... ~ (Page#) ~ ... becomes current pagenumber of [Page=n] header;
... ~ (PageChr) ~ ... becomes small letter, [Page=n] give an "a"
where n = FirstPage (from [Document] item);
... ~ (RunPage#) ~ ... becomes current output page number of Flows;
... ~ () ~ ... will be replaced by 1 space (from beta V).
- Alternative lay out is now almost completely operative.
****** V3.0 for DOS - beta V (3-20, 1993)
- Now synchronization symbols from the [Flows] and [Sync] items are correctly
depicted. Also corrected: imaging of action labels from [Flows] and
[Actions] items.
- The selected files are now also correctly displayed after a new user
configuration is read interactively.
- The setting "TwoLines=" is now interpret too. With this option can be
chosen between one or two lines draw from the FEs to the bottom.
- The vertical position of the FEs is now also correct when no date and no
author's name are depicted.
- In the [Title] item a field that contains just "()" is now replaced by
exactely 1 space. This is helpful to insert a space between a piece of
text and an automatic page number.
****** V3.0 for DOS - beta VI (3-21, 1993)
- The selection of files fron the "Select File" window is now also possible
with the keyboard only.
- The new dummy entity "(PageBreak)" is partly implemented, but still cannot
be used. This keyword must be placed in the first field of a text line
within the [Entities] item. From version 3.0 the dummy entity "(Blank)"
must be placed in the first field too (was: first or second field).
- The variables to be used in the page title must be enclosed by parentheses
"()" in stead of angle brackets "<>".
Note: The English version of this text file does not mention the angle
brackets in beta IV and beta V, because only Dutch speaking people
have tested those releases.
So "<Page#>" becomes "(Page#)", and so on. Now the codes are not
case-sensitive.
- The program has been made more efficient in several point. It consumes
slightly more RAM space to execute. This is neccesary for coming extensions.
- The new option "AskConfirm=" has been added in FLOWS.INI. With this settings
several confirmation questions can be disabled. E.g. after depressing
<Alt-F4>, <Alt-X>, or <Ctrl-Q> to leave Flows. Also messages like
"Windows 3.x detected ... Press any key." will be removed after a shorter
delay.
- Illegal characters in the action-icons field (within the [Flows] item) will
cause no errors and no whitespace anymore. Before version 3.0 the "0" was
recognized and interpret as an "O". From now the "0" is illegal.
- If Windows is detected the mouse will be controlled in a slightly different
way. Now Logitech and some other (obsolete) mouse drivers function
correctly in a full screen DOS box.
- KNOWN PROBLEM:
Some mouse drivers operate incorrectly
in a Windowed DOS box.
****** V3.0 for DOS - beta VI (3-23, 1993)
- All data is now dynamically stored in the RAM. Flows uses the memory more
efficient, flexible, and faster.
- Again mouse control has been changed. Keyboard speedup will be activated in
non-Windows evironment only.
- The "(PageBreak)" code is now interpret without errors. On this moment is
has about the same effect as "(Blank)".
- Line numbers used to cause a decreased left margin. Now line numbers are
placed inside the normal images outlines (the information flow arrows are
shifted to the right a few millimeters).
- New [Title] codes added: "(SubPage#)" and "(SubPageChr)". These codes
return the pagenumber caused by the dummy "(PageBreak)" entities. The
first (or leftmost) page is "1" or lower case "a". If a page consists of
one subpage - no "(pagebreak)" present - the return values are: "1" and "".
- Pages without FEs are now skipped without causing a printer error. A message
is displayed in the status window.
- Subpage support is now complete.
- New item added: "[GlobalVars]" and "[LocalVars]" to be used for dynamic
titles.
- In [Title] item new codes added: "(#SubPages#)" and "(Var:...)". The latter
can be used in combination with ohter codes:
[LocalVars]
1a ~ Page~()~(RunPage#)~.
1b ~ Something else...
[Title]
This is page~()~(Var: 1(SubPageChr))
Variables names are case insensitive.
- The FE references in the [Relations] item are now also interpret correctly
if the second FE reference is lower (more to the left) than the first one
on a line.
- Nicknames are now case insensitive (for 3.0 source files only).
- Following characters are not allowed in nicknames and variables names:
( ) < > " and spaces.
- Nicknames in source files before version 3.0 are placed in angle brackets.
From version 3.0 only round brackets are accepted. This is now correctly
detected and processed.
- One global variable is always defined: "(Var: FLOWS)". This variable returns
the program version, in this case: "Flows V3.0ß". Variable names cannot be
overwritten.
- The "Legend=" option has been extended for FLOWS.INI, user *.SET files,
[Document] items, and [Page=...] items. Now the "Legend=" option accepts
up to two values, separated by a comma. The values may be exchanged. If only
one value is present, the other will not be affected.
First set of values: NO, LEFT, RIGHT, FULL, CENTRE.
Second set of values: FIRST, LAST, ALL.
Examples:
Legend=Right
Legend=First,Right
Legend=Full,First
Legend=All
The FIRST, LAST, and ALL values affect the subpage on which the legend will
be depicted.
- The [Sync] and [Actions] items not not correctly process on pages containing
subpages.
- A new options is added for FLOWS.INI, user *.SET, and [Document] items:
"ReductionMethod=". The possible values are LOOSE, NORMAL, and MAX. This
option affects the way information flow lines are depicted on pages
containing subpages. LOOSE is causes no overlapping, but consumes most
space. NORMAL may cause two lines to be depicted on the same line if they
don't share entities. If the the endpoints of two flows share a FE, the
flows will be placed on two subsequent lines. This may cause overlapping
labels or action icons. The MAX method tries to save as much space as
possible.
Note: in this beta release the MAX method results in the same image as
the NORMAL method. The MAX and NORMAL methods will get better later on.
- In stead of the item header [Flows] now the header [InfoFlows] is required.
****** V3.0 for DOS - beta VII (3-30, 1993)
- A new option has been added in FLOWS.INI: "MemMonitor=". This option is
used to enable/disable a small window containing heap information.
Possible values are: "no" "yes", and "On top".
- When creating printer output, now a message will come up if the output file
already exists. Possible choices are: Abort, New name, Overwrite, Append.
- Now "(pagebreak)" is correctly processed, including swapping between
portrait and landscape orientation for single pages (eventually containing
multiple subpages).
- Now sync symbols are imaged correctly (beta VI didn't depict them at all).
- Now action labels are display below the right information flow.
****** V3.0 for DOS - beta VII-2 (3-31, 1993)
- Now the cursor will be invisible - as should be - when the "Memory" window
is enabled.
- Correction in the scroll function for the "Status" window.
- Images using obsolete lay out are now depicted on the page again. One
variable wasen't initialized, so the images were shifted down about 200 mm.
This has been corrected.
- An information flow on virtual line 1 will now be depicted below the FEs if
the line distance is at least 4 mm.
- Line numbers of lines that contain more than one information flow are now
writen just once in the output files.
- Slanted relationship lines from/to the side margin are now better placed.
- Item containing global information in *.FLW files must now be placed before
the first page in version 3.0 files. These items are:
[Document]
[GlobalVars]
[Demo...]
[Scenario...]
Also for the following item in other files:
[Settings]
[Flows.exe...]
[Global...]
- The pages in the *.FLW file must now be placed in ascending order. Of
course only in version 3.0 compatible files.
- The "OutlineFEs" settings is now ignored in user configuration *.SET files.
- The [Document] header will not be recognized anymore in version 3.0
compatible user *.SET files. From version 3.0 only the [Settings] header
can be used.
- The "Actions", "Orientation", and "Planes" settings cannot be used anymore
in version 3.0 compatible files. In stead of these settings the more
informative "ActionLabels", "ImageOrientation", and "Levels" settings should
be used.
- In stead of the item header [Flows] now the header [InfoFlows] is required.
Of course only for V3.0 compatible source files!
- When using obsolete image lay out, no outline will be depicted around the
image.
- Now all use of angle brackets "<>" is replaced by parentheses "()".
- Now Flows consumes much less memory.
- Now Flows runs on XT all computers.
- Now Flows runs under DOS 3.1 and up. If the environment variable FLOWSDIR
is present, the given directory is asumed to be the directory containing
FLOWS.EXE. This variable is required for DOS versions older than 3.30.
- KNOWN PROBLEMS:
o If multiple action labels are to be depicted just below each other,
they may overwrite/be overwritten by lower information flows.
o The "maximum" reduction method is still about the same as "normal".
o Appending to output files has been disabled temporarily.
o Some mouse drivers may operate incorrectly in a Windowed DOS box.
- MIND:
o In stead of the item header [Flows] now the header [InfoFlows] is
required. Of course only for V3.0 compatible source files!
o Now parentheses "()" are used in stead of angle brackets "<>" in all
places: this includes nicknames, dummy entities, title codes and
variables.
****** V3.0 for DOS - beta VIII (4-10, 1993)
- File existance check is now executed for all output files. For single page
output, a new page number may be entered.
- On error output pages or files may be skipped now.
- "Import" menu entry is now available. Select the import source type before
selecting the file(s).
- In new lay out now instance letter are depicted again. In obsolete lay out
and V3.0 compatible files, instance letters are depicted even if no FE name
has been specified.
- Unneccessary screen refreshes are removed.
- In the [Entities] item the "level" field may now contain two values:
example: ... ~ level,toplvl ~ ...
syntax: ... ~ [<level> [,<toplvl>]] ~ ...
The first value is about still the same as before, but illegal input values
are interpret differently (as if no value is present).
The second value can be used to create large FEs: FEs that are higher than
just one level. In this case the second level identifies the top of the FE.
Large FEs cannot have elliptical shapes.
- For V3.0 files an illegal FE level number will be interpret as follows:
if the values is within the range 1..4 the local (page only) "Levels="
settings will be adjusted. So the "Levels=" option has a reduced
functionality.
Other values are converted to 1 (for interjacent FEs) or the true "Levels="
values (for the leftmost and rightmost FE).
Mind this: For older source files illegal values are always converted to
1 (if input is zero) or "Levels=" values (others).
- If no level value is present, Flows will interpret this as an error case
for V3.0 files. Thus new source files are interpret slightly different.
- The maximum number if instances for V3.0 compatible files is increased to
5 for all FEs on levels below the "Levels=" value. So the uppermost FEs can
still have up to 3 instances, while others can have up to 5.
- A new field is appended in the [Entities] item: the virtual instances
specification field. If present, this field contains the instance letters
to be used inside the current page for compilation AND for imaging.
Small example:
[Entities]
2 ~ OBCA ~ 1 ~ (BCagent) ~ ac
In this case two instances are depicted: instance "a" and "c". The number
of letters specified must match the number of instances given in the first
field.
In the [InfoFlows] item information flows may be specified as following:
[InfoFlows]
L (BCagent)a ~ ~BEARER ENQ. (1)~req. ind.
L (BCagent)c ~+ ~BEARER ENQ. (3)~req. ind.
After each letter an optional "+" or "-" may be specified. A plus means
that this instance is newly created during the current scenario. A minus
means that this instance will be terminated during the current sceanrio.
So the plus and minus symbols contain dynamic information, which - of
course - cannot be depicted on a (static) page. The "+" and "-" signs are
used by the stage-2 demonstrator/simulator software.
An entire data line in the [Entities] item contains following information
(the names between angle brackets must be replaced by their values):
<number_of_instances>[E] ~ <FE_name> ~ [<at_level>[,<toplevel>]] ~
(<nickname>) ~ [<let1>[+|-]{<letn>[+|-]}]
****** V3.0 for DOS - beta IX (4-12, 1993)
- Global items to be used by the demonstrator (something like "[Demo...]")
must be placed before the first page in the source files.
- Flows is no public domain software. The registered implementation does
not display startup messages and runs significantly faster. The Windows
version will be available to registered users only.
See also the files README.1ST and README.2ND.
- The "Export" menu entry is implemented yet. Output formats which are still
unavailable cannot be selected. The user is informed by a warning beep.
The "PS printer" and "Encapsulated PostScript (EPS)" output modes can be
selected.
- The "Page Setup" menu entry will pop up an empty window now.
****** V3.0 for DOS - beta X (4-20, 1993)
- Error in EPS files solved. By mistake the option "PageOverlay=yes" caused an
error after importing EPS files in WordPerfect or MS-Word.
- The internal structure is now fully prepared for new output formats.
- The name Q73DEMO.EXE is changed to ST2DEMO.EXE by the developer of the
demonstrator, because the software is not only suited for Q.73 but also
(at least) for Q.71. The name name is now enclosed in Flows.
- Added two new example files to demonstrate some new features of Flows 3.0.
FLOWS IS NO PUBLIC DOMAIN SOFTWARE. THE REGISTERED IMPLEMENTATION DOES
NOT DISPLAY STARTUP MESSAGES AND RUNS SIGNIFICANTLY FASTER. THE WINDOWS
VERSION WILL BE AVAILABLE TO REGISTERED USERS ONLY.
SEE ALSO THE FILES *README.1ST* AND *README.2ND*.
